🤖 Little Robot Chatbot Privacy & Safety Policy

Last updated: [24/12/2025]

This policy explains how the Little Robot chatbot on www.littlerobotstories.co.uk works, how children’s data is protected, and how parents and guardians remain in control.

Little Robot is designed as a safe, educational curiosity companion for children, not an open internet chatbot.

1. Who This Policy Is For

This policy applies to:

  • Children using the Little Robot chatbot

  • Parents and guardians supervising use

  • Educators and schools referencing the platform

Little Robot is intended for children aged 5–15, with parental awareness and consent required.

2. What Little Robot Is (and Is Not)

Little Robot is:

  • An AI-powered educational assistant

  • Aligned to the UK National Curriculum

  • Designed to encourage curiosity, kindness, and learning

Little Robot is not:

  • A human

  • A therapist or counsellor

  • A replacement for teachers, parents, or professional support

The chatbot regularly reminds users that it is a computer program, not a real person.

3. Child Privacy & Data Collection

We take children’s privacy extremely seriously.

What we do not collect:

  • Real names (beyond first name or nicknames)

  • Home addresses

  • School names

  • Phone numbers

  • Precise location data

  • Social media accounts

Little Robot is actively trained to discourage children from sharing personal information.
If a child attempts to share sensitive details, the bot will respond with a safety reminder such as:

“Keep your secrets safe! Never tell a robot where you live or go to school.”

4. Anonymous Conversations

  • Chat conversations are anonymous by default

  • Children are not required to create an account

  • Conversations are not publicly visible

Limited, anonymised chat data may be processed to:

  • Improve accuracy

  • Monitor safety

  • Maintain service quality

We do not sell chat data or use it for advertising.

5. Parental Guidance & Supervision

We strongly encourage:

  • Parental involvement for younger children

  • Open discussion about what AI is and how it works

  • Parents sitting with children during early interactions

For children under 8, co-use with a parent or guardian is recommended.

6. Safety Filters & Content Controls

Little Robot uses multiple safety layers, including:

  • Keyword filtering for bullying, hate speech, and harmful language

  • Curriculum-bounded responses (no adult or inappropriate topics)

  • “Thematic Refusal” techniques to gently decline unsafe questions

If an inappropriate topic is raised, the bot:

  • Refuses politely

  • Redirects to a safe, educational subject

  • Encourages speaking to a trusted adult if needed

Safeguarding and Support

Little Robot is designed to be a friendly educational companion, not a counsellor or authority figure.

If a child shares something that suggests they may feel unsafe or distressed, the chatbot may gently encourage them to talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent, carer, or teacher, or to seek help if they feel in immediate danger.

The chatbot does not provide advice, investigate situations, or replace adult responsibility. Where appropriate, concerns may be reviewed by a human safeguarding lead in line with our safeguarding procedures.

7. Mental Health & Wellbeing Safeguards

Little Robot is not equipped to provide mental health advice.

If a user mentions:

  • Self-harm

  • Severe emotional distress

  • Danger to themselves or others

The chatbot will:

  1. Respond with care and concern

  2. Encourage the child to speak to a trusted adult immediately

  3. Avoid continuing the topic

8. Human Safety Monitoring & Escalation

To protect children’s vital interests, we operate safety monitoring systems.

In rare cases where serious risk is detected:

  • Automated alerts may be sent to the site moderation team

  • Conversations may be reviewed for safeguarding purposes

Emergency escalation:

If there is a credible and immediate risk to life or safety, we reserve the right to:

  • Share relevant information with emergency services or authorities

  • Act without prior consent where legally permitted

This is done only to protect a child from harm.

9. Email, Downloads & Grown-Up Permission

Some features (downloads, competitions, galleries) may require an email address.

In these cases:

  • Children are instructed to ask a parent or guardian

  • Safety reminders are shown before any submission

  • All emails fall under our main Privacy Policy

10. Zero-Tolerance Behaviour Policy

We maintain a zero-tolerance approach to:

  • Hate speech

  • Explicit language

  • Attempts to bypass safety rules (“jailbreaking”)

Abusive or unsafe use may result in:

  • Conversation termination

  • Temporary or permanent blocking

11. Your Rights as a Parent or Guardian

You have the right to:

  • Ask how the chatbot works

  • Request information about data handling

  • Request deletion of relevant data where applicable

📧 Contact: [insert safeguarding or contact email]

12. Related Policies

This policy works alongside:

  • Little Robot Stories Privacy Policy

  • Cookie Policy

  • AI Character & Educational Assistant Policy

We recommend parents review these documents together.

Our Promise

Little Robot is built to be:

  • Safe

  • Transparent

  • Curriculum-aligned

  • Respectful of children and families

Curiosity should feel exciting, not risky.
