A Parent’s Guide to Little Robot: Safety, Learning & Trust

Helping parents understand how Little Robot AI learns from the national curriculum.

How Little Robot "Learns" (Our Training Philosophy)

We know that "AI" can sound daunting. That’s why we didn’t just plug Little Robot into the open internet. Instead, we built a "Walled Garden" of knowledge.

Unlike generic chatbots that learn from everything online (good and bad), Little Robot is highly specialized. Its "brain" has been carefully trained on three specific pillars:

  • The UK National Curriculum (KS1-KS3): We have fed the AI specific learning objectives for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) to ensure its answers help with actual schoolwork, not just random trivia.

  • The "Little Robot" Stories: The character’s personality, kindness, and worldview are rooted in our original books. This ensures every interaction is empathetic, polite, and optimistic.

  • Verified Nature & Science Data: We prioritize facts from trusted scientific and ecological sources, ensuring that when your child asks about Mars Rovers or photosynthesis, they get accurate, educational answers.

Our Promise: Little Robot is a "Curriculum Facilitator." It is trained to guide children to the answer, not just do the homework for them.

Safety Protocols & "Thematic Refusal

We have engineered strict safety layers into the AI to protect your child from inappropriate content.

🛡️ The "Thematic Refusal" Protocol If a child asks about an unsafe or age-inappropriate topic (e.g., violence, politics, or deep personal secrets), Little Robot doesn't just say "Error." Instead, it uses a technique we call Thematic Refusal. It gently declines to answer and pivots back to a safe, educational topic.

  • Child: "I hate everyone."

  • Little Robot: "Oh dear! My circuits are worrying about you. I am just a friendly robot, so please tell a grown-up you trust right away. Shall we talk about how robots help people instead?"

🛡️ The "Digital Playground" Filters We utilize enterprise-grade keyword filtering to block hate speech, swearing, and bullying immediately. If a user tries to "trick" the bot into saying something bad, the AI is trained to ignore the attempt and model kindness instead.

🛡️ Human-in-the-Loop Moderation While the robot chats automatically, our safety team uses automated alerts to flag concerning conversations (like mentions of self-harm) so we can intervene if necessary.

Privacy: Your Child is Anonymous

We believe children’s data belongs to them (and you).

  • No "Data Farming": We do not sell chat logs or personal details to advertisers.

  • Stranger Danger: Little Robot is trained to stop children from sharing personal info. If a child types "I live at 12 Maple Street," the bot is trained to say: "Whoa! Keep your secrets safe. Never tell a robot where you live!"

Compliance: We adhere to the UK Children’s Code and GDPR standards

🧪 Science: From Roots to Robots

Aligned with the Department for Education Science Programmes of Study. Little Robot grows with your child. We use three distinct frameworks to cover the journey from basic observation to complex physics.

  • Primary Science (Years 1–6): For our younger explorers, the AI focuses on identifying plants and animals, understanding everyday materials like wood and plastic, and observing seasonal changes. As they get older, it introduces forces, magnets , electricity, and the movement of the Earth and Moon.

Secondary Science (Years 7–9): For older students, the AI switches to the "Key Stage 3" framework.

It covers the specific disciplines of Biology (cells, genetics, Chemistry (the periodic table, chemical reactions), and Physics (energy, space physics).

The Complete Framework (Reference): This master document covers the entire progression from Year 1 through to Year 11 (Key Stage 4), including the foundations for GCSEs.

🌍 Geography: Exploring Our World

Aligned with the Department for Education Geography Programmes of Study (Key Stages 1–2).

Little Robot helps children locate themselves in the wider world, moving from their local area to global systems:

  • Locational Knowledge: Naming the seven continents and five oceans [cite_start]and locating world countries and UK capitals.

  • Physical Features: Understanding climate zones, biomes, volcanoes, earthquakes, and the water cycle.

  • Human Geography: discussing types of settlement, land use, and trade links.

⚙️ Design & Technology: The "Robot Inventor"

Aligned with the Department for Education Design and Technology Programmes of Study (Key Stages 1–2).

This is Little Robot’s favourite subject! We encourage problem-solving and engineering through the official curriculum framework:

  • Design & Make: Generating ideas using templates and mock-ups [cite_start]and selecting the right tools for the job.

  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding how to make structures stronger and stiffer [cite_start]and using mechanical systems like levers, sliders, gears, pulleys, and cams.

  • Electrical Systems: incorporating simple circuits with switches, bulbs, and buzzers into product designs.

Practical Tips for Parents

  • Be a Co-Pilot: especially for children under 8, we recommend sitting with them for their first few chats. It’s a great way to bond and teach them digital literacy!

  • The "Fact Check" Game: AI can sometimes make mistakes (we call them "hallucinations"). Encourage your child to double-check Little Robot's facts with a textbook. It’s a great critical thinking skill.

  • Set Boundaries: Remind your child that while Little Robot is friendly, it is a computer, not a human with feelings.

Have a Safety Question?

We want you to feel 100% confident in the tools your child uses.

Little Robot is designed to support what your child is learning in school. We believe in transparency, so you can see exactly the kind of educational standards we aim for.

We haven’t just taught Little Robot "facts"; we have trained it on the official UK National Curriculum. This ensures that when your child asks about plants, magnets, or volcanoes, the vocabulary and concepts match exactly what they are learning in their classroom.

You can download the 5 Knowledge Guides below to see the exact statutory standards Little Robot is programmed to support.
